    ASTM F436/F436M Type 3 Washer

ASTM F436 Type 3 washers are weathering steel hardened washers used with A325 Type 3 and A490 Type 3 bolts on exposed structural steel where atmospheric corrosion resistance is required. They must meet a Corrosion Resistance Index (CRI) of 6.0 or higher calculated from heat analysis per ASTM Guide G101 using the Legault-Leckie formula, or be manufactured from any of the steels listed in Table 2 of Specification A588/A588M and F3125. Type 3 chemistry requires copper 0.25-0.45%, nickel 0.25-0.45%, chromium 0.45-0.65%, and silicon 0.15-0.35% on heat analysis.

Chemical analyses are performed in accordance with Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A751. Product analysis tolerances do not apply to Type 3 washers furnished to a CRI of 6 or higher calculated from heat analysis. The Corrosion Resistance Index is calculated per ASTM G101 Prediction Method based on the work of Larrabee and Coburn. The protective oxide patina that develops on weathering steel replaces paint protection on bridges, transmission towers and architectural structures.

    • (A) When providing Weathering Steels to a calculated corrosion index use the Legault-Leckie formula from Guide G101.
    • I = 26.01 (% Cu) + 3.88( % Ni) + 1.20 (% Cr) + 1.49 (% Si) + 17.28 (% P) - 7.29 (% Cu) - 9.10( % Ni) (% P)- 33.39 (%Cu)2
    • (B) Weathering steel washers may also be manufactured from any of the steels listed in Table 2 of Specification A588/A588M and F3125.
