F436 Washer Dimensions — Inch and Metric Tolerances

ASTM F436 washer dimensions are specified per F436/F436M for flatness, concentricity, and burr across four nominal-size bands in the inch series and two bands in the metric series. Inch washers cover thread diameters from 1/4 in. through 4 in.; metric washers cover M12 through M100. Per-geometry size data (inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness, clipped width) is published on the four Type 1 and four Type 3 variant pages.

Per-size inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness and clipped-width measurements are published on each variant page:

    F436 vs F436M Dimensions

F436 covers the inch-series dimensional tables (thread diameter 1/4 in. through 4 in.). F436M covers the metric-series tables (M12 through M100). The mechanical and hardness requirements are identical between the two; only the dimensional tables differ to match inch versus metric thread sizes. Both Type 1 (carbon steel) and Type 3 (weathering steel) grades are available in both series. Detailed F436/F436M specification data is on the F436 washer specifications page; standard reference download is the F436 PDF.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the F436 hardened washer dimensions?

ASTM F436/F436M Tables 2 and 4 publish hardened steel washer dimensions for all four styles in inch (1/4 in. through 4 in.) and metric (M12 through M100). The tables specify inside diameter (min/max), outside diameter (min/max), standard thickness (min/max), and extra-thick thickness where applicable. For example, a 1 in. nominal circular washer has 1.063 to 1.126 in. ID, 1.937 to 2.063 in. OD, and 0.136 to 0.177 in. standard thickness.

What is the thickness tolerance on F436 washers?

F436 Table 2 publishes a min and max thickness for each nominal size, giving an as-supplied band rather than a single nominal value. For example, a 3/4 in. nominal circular washer has 0.122 in. minimum and 0.177 in. maximum thickness — about a 0.055 in. window. Extra-thick variants in 1/2 through 1 1/2 in. are specified at 0.305 to 0.375 in. thickness (5/16 in. nominal), giving a tighter 0.070 in. band suited to structural oversized-hole work.

Why does F436 specify a clipped edge minimum distance?

Note A to Table 2 sets the clipped-edge distance E at not closer than 7/8 of the bolt diameter from the center of the washer. The clipped edge removes one side of the washer to fit alongside an adjacent member, beam flange or column flange. The 7/8-diameter rule preserves enough bearing area on the remaining sides to develop the full structural clamp load. Below that distance, the bearing area drops and the washer can yield under preload, defeating its purpose.
