ASTM F436 vs DIN 125 - Hardened Steel vs Flat Washer Comparison

ASTM F436/F436M hardened steel washers and DIN 125 flat washers are not interchangeable. F436 is a structural-bolting washer hardened to 38-45 HRC for use with A325, A490 and F3125 high-strength bolting; DIN 125 (now superseded by ISO 7089) is a soft flat washer for general-purpose mechanical service in non-preloaded joints. This page sets the two standards side by side so engineers and procurement teams can pick the right washer for the joint at hand.

Why F436 is hardened and DIN 125 is not

The 38-45 HRC hardness in F436 is not arbitrary. A high-strength structural bolt installed to 70% of yield strength (typical for A490) generates very high bearing pressure under the head and nut. A soft washer like DIN 125 plastically deforms ("brinells") under that load, partially shedding the preload as the washer flows. F436's hardened steel resists that deformation and preserves the installed clamp load through the joint's service life. For preloaded structural bolting per RCSC Specification or AISC 360, an F436-type hardened washer is mandatory; a DIN 125 flat washer is not acceptable.

    When to use each

Structural steel connections (AISC, EN 1090)Yes (mandatory with HSFG bolts)No
    A325 / A490 / F1852 / F2280 boltingYesNo
Bridge bolting, transmission towerYes (Type 3 weathering)No
    General machinery, brackets, panelsOptionalYes (cost-effective)
Property class 4.6 - 8.8 bolts, low preloadOptionalYes
    Property class 10.9 / 12.9 preloadedYes (hardness needed)No

    Dimensional differences (M16 example)

    ParameterF436M, M16DIN 125, M16
    Inside diameter (mm)17.5 to 18.517.0 to 17.4
    Outside diameter (mm)33.5 to 35.529.4 to 30.0
    Thickness (mm)3.0 to 4.53.0
    Outer-to-inner ratio~2.0 (larger bearing area)~1.75

The larger outer diameter on F436 distributes the high bolt preload over a wider area, reducing local crushing on the underlying structural member. This is one of the visible engineering reasons F436 cannot be substituted with DIN 125 of the same nominal size in structural service.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I substitute DIN 125 for ASTM F436?

No, not in structural bolting service. DIN 125 is a soft flat washer (around 140 HV / 75 HRB) that plastically deforms under high preload from A325, A490 or F3125 structural bolts. ASTM F436 is hardened to 38-45 HRC specifically to resist that deformation and preserve installed clamp load. For property-class-10.9 metric bolting in preloaded joints, the correct metric hardened washer is F436M, not DIN 125. DIN 125 is acceptable only in non-preloaded general-purpose applications where the bolt is property class 8.8 or lower.

What is the metric equivalent of ASTM F436?

The direct metric equivalent of ASTM F436 is ASTM F436M, covering M12 through M100 with identical chemistry, hardness and corrosion-resistance requirements to the inch F436. F436M is referenced by ASTM F3125 Grade A325M / A490M and by ISO 7415 high-strength structural friction-grip bolting. EN 14399-6 (HV-system structural washers) is the closest European structural equivalent and uses similar hardness control to F436M.

Is DIN 125 still a current standard?

DIN 125 has been superseded by ISO 7089 (Form A, without chamfer) and ISO 7090 (Form B, with chamfer). The DIN 125 designation is still widely used in product catalogues and procurement specifications in Europe and India because the dimensional tables and tolerance system carried over essentially unchanged. ISO 7089 and ISO 7090 are the current standards a new design specification should cite.

What hardness class of ISO 7089 matches F436?

ISO 7089 specifies hardness classes 100HV, 140HV, 200HV, and 300HV. None of these reach the F436 hardness band of 38-45 HRC (approximately 372 to 434 HV). The closest ISO standard for hardened structural washers is EN 14399-6 (HV-system), which specifies a 300 to 370 HV minimum hardness band for high-strength structural bolting flat washers — still below F436's 372 to 434 HV ceiling but closer than ISO 7089. For full hardness parity with F436, specify EN 14399-6 type HV300.
